Overview
GoGreen UK supplies a wide range of compostable food packaging designed for cafés, caterers, and corporate kitchens. Two of our most popular material families are bagasse and kraft paperboard. Understanding how they differ helps you choose the right container for hot meals, cold salads, and takeaway service.
What is bagasse?
Bagasse is a natural by-product of sugarcane processing. The fibrous pulp is moulded into sturdy plates, bowls, clamshells, and lids. It is grease-resistant, handles hot food up to approximately 100°C, and is suitable for microwave reheating in short bursts. Bagasse breaks down in commercial composting within 60–90 days.
What is kraft packaging?
Kraft food packaging uses unbleached or lightly bleached paperboard with a plant-based lining. It is ideal for sandwiches, bakery items, and light hot snacks. Kraft boxes are stackable, printable, and widely accepted in kerbside paper recycling where food residue is minimal.
Choosing the right option
- Hot, saucy dishes: bagasse bowls and clamshells
- Dry or lightly oiled food: kraft boxes and trays
- Branded takeaway: custom-print kraft with water-based inks
- Events and festivals: bagasse plates with matching compostable cutlery
Certifications to look for
Check for EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 compostability marks and FSC-certified paper sources. GoGreen UK lists certification details on every product page. If you need a compliance pack for your sustainability audit, contact our Pre-Sales team.
